Sleep mode in Windows 10 and 11 is a special power state, where the system cuts power to most parts of the hardware. Although it might seem that the computer does not work or consume electricity, the power supply continues providing electricity to several vital components, such as RAM, to ensure your apps can continue where you left them. Your computer also “monitors” peripheral devices, such as the mouse and keyboard, allowing you to wake it up by wiggling the mouse or pressing any key on the keyboard. And that is where some users have problems. Not everyone likes how a mouse or keyboard can wake up their computer, and accidental clicks or moves can turn on the PC, which is inconvenient for some users.
This article will show you how to stop the mouse from waking up your PC. It applies to all modern Windows versions: 11, 10, 8, and 7.
Stop Mouse from Waking Computer
- Press Win + X or right-click the Start menu button and select Device Manager.
- Another way to open Device Manager in Windows is to press Win + R and type devmgmt.msc.
- Find the Mice and other pointing devices list and expand it.
- Locate your mouse in the list. You may find a specific mouse name (for example, Logitech MX Master 3S) or a generic HID-compliant mouse. Whatever your case, right-click the available mouse.
- Select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck the Allow this device to wake the computer option and click Ok.
- Now you need to repeat the same steps for your keyboard. Find the Keyboards list and expand it, then right-click your keyboard and select Properties.
If you use a single USB receiver to connect your mouse and keyboard to the computer, do the following (this might help you detect the exact mouse and keyboard you are currently using):
- Press Win + R and type control. This command will launch the classic Control Panel.
- Switch to the Large or Small icons view and click Devices and Printers.
- Find your receiver in the list of available devices and right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- In the new window, switch to the Hardware tab and look at the Type column.
- Find Keyboards and click Properties.
- In the new window, click Change settings. This action requires administrative privileges, so your computer might ask you to enter the administrator password (if your user has no administrative rights).
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the Allow this device to wake the computer.
- Click Ok.
- Repeat steps 7-9 for the Mice type.
Now your computer should not wake up when you move the mouse or press something on the keyboard. In case you want to undo the changes, repeat all the steps above and place a checkmark next to the Allow this device to wake the computer option for your mouse and keyboard.
That is how you prevent mouse from waking computer.
