What to Do if I Forgot Mac Password?

The operating system developed by Apple has high requirements for security and privacy. Many tasks in macOS require you to enter your account password. In many cases, you won’t even be able to log into the operating system if you enter your password incorrectly. What do I do if I forget my MacBook password? This is a common problem. In this article, you will learn how to reset the password on Mac and regain access to your operating system.

Note that you can enter an unlimited number of passwords on your Mac, unlike iCloud security. After 10, 20 or more incorrect entry attempts, your device will not lock. So, you can try to pick the right password, always consisting of four characters.

Can’t remember or guess your password? In that case, try some of our tips.

If you can’t remember your Apple login password, use Recovery Mode to recover your password.

  1. The first thing you need to do is shut down your computer. You can do this even if you forget the password and enter it incorrectly several times.
  2. After shutting down, turn on your computer and immediately press the key combination ⌘Cmd + R. This is necessary for the computer to boot into safe mode with the possibility of data recovery.
  3. Wait a few minutes for the computer to boot up.
  4. Then open Disk Utility.

  7. Then you will be prompted to select one drive on which you want to change the data. Select the primary drive on which your computer’s operating system is installed.
  8. Then select a user account from the list provided.
  9. Follow the instructions and specify a new password to change it.

This action will help you if you forgot Mac admin password. However, there are other ways to solve this problem. For example, you can try reset admin password mac via iCloud (use our tutorial in case you need to restore not only your password but also your computer data).

To reset MacBook password via iCloud, you must link your Apple ID to your Mac account during the initial setup, which will reset the user password in just a few clicks.

After entering the wrong password three times, you will be asked if you want to reset the password using your Apple ID if it is linked to your account. Next, follow these two simple steps:

  1. Enter your Apple ID email address and password.
  2. Follow the prompts to create a new password.

When you change your password, you’ll see a message to create a new keychain (where all your passwords are stored). You won’t be able to use the old keychain for security purposes, but it will remain saved on your Mac. If you ever remember your old password, you can unlock the old keychain.

If you don’t see a message after the third incorrect password attempt, your account is not associated with your Apple ID, and you need to use the first method in our instructions.

Do you want to never forget your password in the future? Create a tooltip in the security settings to help you remember the combination.
